So in this book while the main characters are wolves with a scene stealing raven, I sometimes had trouble visualizing the wolves communicating with one another because it just didn’t seem real. While I definitely had fun reading this, I would be hesitant to recommend it, as I can see this is not a book for everyone.
I plan on giving this book three stars, but the writing itself would have a five star rating! For this reason, her pack leader, Ruuqo, killed each of her siblings on their inspection day and drove her mother away. I seem to change my answer anytime anyone asks me this, because there are so many writers who inspired me, and I can never make up my mind which to talk about.

I am the kind of reader that focuses on character and plot. Set 14, years ago, Promise of the Wolves takes us to a land where time is counted in phases of the moon, distance is measured promlse wolflengths, and direction by the scent of the nearest trail.
Promise of the Wolves is a lovely book. You definitely won’t regret it. In Promise of the Wolves, she gives you a vision of the world 14, years ago from the point of view of Kaala Smallteeth, a young wolf in the Swift River Pack of the Wide Valley, and in doing so she teaches you about the co-evolution of humans and wolves.
Risking expulsion from their pack and exile from the Wide Valley, Kaala and her young packmates begin to hunt with the humans and thus discover the long-hidden bond between the two clans.
Set 14, years ago in what is now Southern Europe, Promise of the Wolves is told from the point of view of Kaala, a young wolf born of a forbidden, mixed-blood litter. She faces many life-and-death promize in the first chapters, but for someone who faced those struggles and dealt with those emotions firsthand, the voice of the narration is a little stale.

Kaala, the main wolf-character, captured me immediately – she is faced with adversity from her birth and her strong spirit and determination see her into the pack she so wants to be a part of.
I made use hearwt artistic license to take the idea further than any current research supports to place the wolves at key points in human evolution. At times I found my attention waning. And she sticks fast to those beliefs, never faltering or wavering in them. I mentioned that this was part of a trilogy, but this in no way felt drastically open-ended like the trend seems to be these days.
Perhaps these are all minor details, but they come together to prevent me from truly getting into the book. The interactions between the wolves and people were really well-done. Ruuqo looks on Kaala with a jaundiced eye, resenting her presence in sorothy pack, and life is not easy for Kaala. The depictions of the wolf pack are both interesting and fascinating. Quite a satisfying read. The early portion of the book spends sufficient time on this and helps you establish an emotional bond with the main character.

I highly recommend this book, its a lovely story and there is more to come as this is only the first book in what is to be a trilogy.

Reading Group Guide
The first in a proposed trilogy, this story set in a wilderness 14, years ago is told from the wolves’ viewpoint. There too the emphasis was often more on dorotny culture and existential identity. Hearst’s writing is both tense and absorbing and happily the major plot lines are all resolved by the end of the book, together with hints of more to come. Jun 30, fenrir rated it liked it.
Why did you read this book? I would have been happy enough with this as a stand alone. The writing here was really if done.
